- It's just so weird because the external hard drive was working last week...
- Latest updates. 13" 2011 Macbook Pro with Lion upgraded from Snow Leopard some time last summer.
- new WD 2TB "My passport Ultra".
- I formatted before the upgrade, but was also able to reformat once I upgraded ( I believed I had done something wrong, so redid it).

So I tried attaching my offsite backup drive to the Mac Mini itself, rather than though my D-LInk powered USB 4 port - and it worked.
