I actually do have experienced this before, quite a few times. The problem most definitely occurs only after waking from sleep, not from Windows turning off the display. I used to run into the hardware conflict problems too, and they can prevent Sleep Mode from functioning correctly as well. I have already tried running the Aero Troubleshooter and it said Windows could not find any problem.
