Got the answer from support at AVIRA, which wouldn't update for me. (also, THunderbird wouldn't "connect to proxy"). That's usually not a problem, because the vendors keep their antivirus definitions up to date in between major revisions. Warning: Your AV software has probably worked great for ages. - I did observe that the full report seems less detailed than what used to appear for McAfee SiteAdvisor.

Protection on macOS and iOS not as full-featured as on Windows and Android. It's worth noting that on the clunker, a full system scan and a repeat scan both took longer with the current edition. Norton's protection rate came in at 98 percent. If so, I believe that is what is causing the 'critical error'.

See How We Test Security Software WebAdvisor I've mentioned the WebAdvisor component's ability to head off dangerous downloads and identify malicious or fraudulent websites. It worked for me! Search for "BASE FILTERING ENGINE" in the list. If so, could you let me have a link to that too as I couldn't find any reference to it (I guess it is not something McAfee wants to shout about!).
