The most useful tip of the Net … Thanks a lot! Other benefits of registering an account are subscribing to topics and forums, creating a blog, and having no ads shown anywhere on the site. The settings on the desktop menu for 'Arrange icons by...' are identical for the two WinXP systems. If I put a file in a certain position in the desktop, and then I open it, change something and re save it, then, automatically in W8 the icon is moved!

My problem is that I would prefer align to grid 'off'; it does turn off each time I uncheck it; but it always boots up again as 'align to grid.' Is Help! Register now! How might I fix the faulty (the latter) one ?
